Top 5 Important Skincare Ingredients for Dry Skin (and where to find them!)

Ok so for my first ever blog post here, I obviously have to talk about skincare, how could I not? if you don't know already, I have a lot of knowledge about skincare ingredients - I go into more about how that came about on the about us page.

I've definitely had my bad, and great experiences with skincare products, as a teen I used all those awful harsh cleansers and scrubs (Clean and clear,, I'm looking at you) and that created some DAMAGE. So over the years, I've spent my time researching skincare ingredients, and I've found that natural skincare is really the way forward!

It took me far to long to realise that the more you do to your skin, actually the worse it tends to get, especially true if you have sensitive skin. But anyways... let's get into these all important ingredients, and where you can find them!


Top 5 Important Skincare Ingredients for Dry Skin (and where to find them!)



1 - Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is SO important in your skincare routine, no matter what your skin type is. Hyaluronic Acid is a serum, and it will help with dry + dehydrated skin.

Hyaluronic Acid is naturally occurring in our bodies, but as we age, our bodies produce less of it which is what can lead to signs of ageing, so it's important to add it back for plump, fresh skin

Hyaluronic Acid typically helps with dry patches, rough skin texture and fine lines. I add it here first because I truly believe every skin type needs this, but particularly it will help if you have tight feeling, dry, dull skin that feels a little 'rough' which are typical signs of dehydrated skin or a compromised skin barrier.  

You might be wondering, Becky, what is a compromised skin barrier?

Your skin barrier can become compromised when external factors, such as irritants, environmental aggressors, or even just overwashing with physical scrubs, or skincare that has harsh ingredients damages the top layer of the skin

a compromised barrier can cause tight, dry, easily irritated skin that is also oily. 

Hyaluronic Acid is great for protecting and rebuilding the skin barrier, along with ceramides and organic oils. When healing a compromised skin barrier, always use natural products.



The Ordinary | Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 - £6.40 


I recommend a basic, straight forward Hyaluronic Acid Serum, applied before moisturising and after cleansing. This particular Hyaluronic Acid is effective yet affordable, and targets all of the issues we talked about above! Note: apply this on damp skin, the acid will draw the water in to the skin.

Pro Vitamin-B5, aka Panthenol is another excellent skin hydrator similar to HA, but also has healing and anti-inflammatory properties. 




2 - Colloidal Oatmeal

or 'Avena Sativa Kernel Extract'. Okay so this a really important ingredient if you have skin conditions and not just a little bit of dry skin here and there. We're talking psoriasis, eczema and severely irritated and dry skin. 

Colloidal Oatmeal is soothing, softening and protects our skin. This is another important ingredient for boosting our skin barrier to keep it healthy and strong. It's an emollient and includes beta-glucan which is moisturising and wound healing, overall a great ingredient if your skin is sensitive, very dry and prone to rashes. 




First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream -  £13.70

On top of Colloidal Oatmeal as a main ingredient in this product, this moisturiser also includes ceramides, shea butter and squalene. Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids that make up our epidermis (outer skin layer), products with ceramides are anti-aging and promote healthy skin.

Butyrospermum Parkii Butter aka Shea Butter is also soothing, moisturising and protects the skin from external factors. 

Squalene is a naturally occurring oil in sebum (which our skin produces) it's a natural moisturising factor that isn't heavy or greasy, it makes skin feel smooth and soft. 

Depending on how you use this product, it could even be used on normal skin for a boost. 




3 - Glycolic Acid / Lactic Acid / Malic Acid etc

These are your chemical exfoliants, aka AHA's (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and despite how scary they sound, they do not harm your skin the way a physical exfoliating scrub will.  They work on dissolving the dead skin cells on the epidermis to reveal newer, brighter, smoother skin. 

Important to note; never use AHA's on damaged skin, open wounds or eczema as it will worsen the affected area and also really sting. Avoid.

I put this in products for dry skin because although potent versions of AHA may nor work well for severely dry skin, there are products out there which combine moisturising factors and AHA's for a more gentle exfoliation. 

It's really important to remove dead skin once or twice a week for smooth skin, it's one of the main ways to quickly target irregular skin texture too.  AHA's can help lift dry patches gently.

If your new to AHA's you need to know 2 things; You HAVE to wear a broad spectrum SPF after using AHA's (at least factor 30 sunscreen!) as they make you more sensitive to UV rays. 

and; PATCH TEST before you use any AHA's on your skin for the first time as there's no way of knowing how your skin will react. 




Mallows Beauty Peachy Face Mask - £18.95

This is a personal favourite of mine, I also enjoy the Mallows Pineapple and Mango Enzyme mask, which you may wanna try for exfoliation (although it is less hydrating than the peachy mask) - these products are ranted and raved about for healing acne prone skin, probably because of the above acids being present in conjunction with salicylic acid at a lower percentage (BHA). 


4 - Argan Oil

aka Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, the oil comes from the kernels of the Argan fruit from Morocco. Always buy this oil cold pressed, you want to avoid oils that are expressed using heat as this can make them lose their nutrients.

So there are other oils that are also great hydrators that come from fruits, but the main reason I prefer Argan oil is because it's oleic vs linoleic acid content are both present in high quantities, and with other oils (Marula or Rosehip) you tend to get less of one, and more of the other, when they are important in conjunction with each other.

Oleic and linoleic acids are naturally occurring fatty acids such as omega-8 and omega-3 (which you can also get by eating fish, yum!) but as we age our skin may struggle to produce enough to keep skin healthy.

Oleic acids are thicker and richer, and present anti-aging and soothing benefits as well as more deep hydration. Linoleic acid is thinner and so absorbs more easily, helps treat acne and helps heal our skin barrier. 

Argan Oil also contains high amounts of Vitamin E, Vitamin E is great for mature skin and works particularly well at keeping the skin soft, and again helps protect the skin barrier from external factors. 



100% Organic Cold Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil - £5.90

You can buy cold pressed Argan oil from a variety of places, but just always make sure that there is nothing else on the ingredient list other than the oil. This one is my favourite as I trust the brand!


5 - Glycerin

Glycerin is a naturally occurring moisturiser, it's already present in our skin.  If you look at ingredient lists, you might see glycerin often, it is super common but for good reason. When used in skincare it helps boost the skin barrier, it's often added as a restorative method to protect against skin irritation from overwashing the skin. 

Glycerin helps our skin recover to a healthy state, or to stay in a healthy state by protecting the epidermis from external factors. All of us need this, no matter who we are or our skin type - external factors are simple things like heavy winds, dust mites, dry climates, humid climates, you name it, it effects your skin.

Glycerin is great at holding moisture, so even if you were to use a product with a high glycerin content (at the top of the ingredient list) and to skip it for a day or two, your skin may still feel the benefits. 

Since you can find glycerin in SO many skincare products, and I haven't mentioned a cleanser yet, let's do that now.


Paula's Choice Defense Cleanser - £22.00

This cleanser is super clean (natural) and is also a makeup remover! For makeup removers you wanna look at cream cleansers and balms, as lighter cleansers won't do the trick. 

The most important ingredients to note apart from glycerin in this cleanser are the phospholipids, the long list of amino acids, and the PCA's. These are all naturally occurring hydrators in our skin that decrease in production as we age. 

specifically phospholipids are there to create liposomes, which help product absorb into the skin and not just sit on top of it. This is a type of lipid, or fatty acid that is present in our skin barrier, adding it to product helps reinforce that barrier. 

Amino Acids are the building blocks of a healthy skin barrier, and they help with a range of skin issues such as hydration, texture and resilience.
